A pilgrim walk

ChennaiPosted by Steph 2009-09-30 00:05:28

There’s something about India that makes me a believer. Or at least there is something that makes me feel free to be a believer, whithout feeling ashamed or awkward.

When i asked my dentist if there was anything i could do to accelerate the process of my bracers, he simply replied: “You can pray”. That’s when i realised that a doctor would never say this in France. Actually, probably nobody would ever say this in France – at least not seriously. In India there’s nothing odd about praying, going to the temple or displaying pictures of gods in your house, on your office desk, on your pc and your mobile. In my circle of friends and colleagues, everybody does all that.

So, on this particular day i felt i had to do something if i wanted to understand India. So i went to the frame maker, chose a picture of Jesus Christ (any other religion would do also, but i happen to be a christian) and i chose a frame style. After 20min i went home with my tailored picture. I decided it was not enough – i always tend to exagerate when i make new resolutions – and i came up with the idea of a pilgrim walk.

On Sunday 27th of September at 6am, Céline and i started from Anna Nagar for a “trek” to the St-Thome Basilica of Chennai, near Marina Beach. This is around 15km. We avoided the large and crowded avenues and made our way through the narrow, dirty but more quiet lanes of Chennai. This was the occasion for us to witness some interesting scenes of life. We also stopped in every church that was on our way (a few shops and art galleries also came across our way...) At 2.30pm we finally reached St-Thome and came back by “auto” (=rikshaw)
